Hi all
I have search all over GPS Australia and this doesn't seem to have been posted before.
There's a handy little app over here:
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTSVoiceEditor
That allows you to customise the TTS voices in your Garmin.
Change "Recalculating" to "Just a second please Dave"
Change "Make a U-Turn" to "Turn around boof head"
You of course can blank the voice instruction altogether , so you do not hear 'Recalculating' (or whatever) any more.
The above site lists compatible devices.
The author - TurboCCC - has also been very generous with his time and help in the forums here:

A back up of your voice file is recommended.
You are also able to leave the original voice file in tact and upload to your device the customised file with a custom name.
TurboCCC has other handy applications on his site as well.
Language Doctor can fix language flaws
English Emily voice : - Fix "St" to say "Street" instead of "Saint"
GUpdateMod Allows you to replace the default .wav files for Speed Camera sounds etc.
Something else to play with on a rainy day :)

From the GPS review threads:
My wife likes to use the British Daniel voice when she drives. My wife's name is Michelle. So I was thinking about changing the phrase "turn left" to "Michelle, I think I'm falling in love with you,,, turn left". And changing the phrase "turn right" to "Michelle, we should get rid of your husband,,, turn right"
