That's not a good comparison because the Geko 301 has a built-in Compass. It's direct equal is the eTrex Summit.

Sorry, I meant it to infer it's Garmin's fault not yours :wave

I would strongly suggest you look at the "H" series eTrex units for the high sensitivity receiver; specifically, the eTrex H (rather than the eTrex) or the Summit HC (rather than the Summit) if you want a compass.

Geko 301 vs. eTrex H comparison here:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=144&compare=compare&compareProduct=8705&compareProduct=221

Summit HC details here:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=145&compare=compare&compareProduct=8709

Hope this helps!

The Gekos are a great *little* GPSr (I've got a 201 somewhere in my car) but they really chew through batteries (even on 'battery saver' mode I never got more than 8 hours) and their screens are very, very small - fine for bushwalking etc, but very hard to read while bouncing around in a car. I find the Etrex screen sooo much easier to read while offroading.
If you're hiking you'll really appreciate the tiny size and light weight of the Geko though.

There is one thing in the comparison list that hits me..

It says that both the geko 301 and the summit have 10,000 trackpoints.
I disagree on that. The summit has (had?) only 3,000 points.
That is THE reason I sold my summit and bought a geko.
Using the Summit and wanting to record all my tracks during a trip I often had to download the tracks during the day because of the trackmemory reaching the 100% full-level.
With the geko this never happens.

So either Garmin altered this or the info is wrong.

Unnecessary to say that, if the Summit would have 10,000 points I had never sold it as battery life is far better....
Besides these two points (and the difference in displayres) the two are identical.
